Still sorting stuff out

Should be getting started any day now...

Site in progress, going live in Februari

I'm still messing around with the layout, and thinking things through about how and what exactly i'm going to post. I'm going to try to make this a quality blog, that will be of interest to any foreign/underground movie lover. I will probably start posting regularely in mid-februari, please check back around that time. Once the new postings begin, i plan to post at least 2-3 movie reviews a week, including lots of info/screenshots/links etc...

Hausu (1977) out on Eureka DVD - 25/01

Those masterminds at Eureka video are finally bringing us this wild and whacky horror masterpiece from Japan on DVD, in their "Masters of Cinema" series. I'm a huge fan of Nobuhiko Obayashi's work, and judging by their previous quality releases, i couldn't be happier that Eureka is doing this release. Available for preorder here

The Shout (1978)

A fine piece of British late seventies cinema here, only recently discovered, and grateful for that! Here's a small synopsis taken from Amazon:

"A macabre tale about a man who believes he has the power to kill with a horrifying death shout. He tells his tale to a composer (John Hurt) who becomes obsessed with harnessing the man's strange powers."

Brilliant electronic scoring, which reminded me a bit of David Cronenberg's "Videodrome", however this one's a bit more subdued, and seems to blend in with the movie a bit better. This movie has a bit of an otherwordly feel to it, mainly because it's relentless in the fact that it leaves just about everything to the imagination. It's been often critisized for explaining nothing, but that's where the magic lies in my opinion.
The movie is based on a short story by Robert Graves, and although I haven't read this short, i've heard that this movie follows the original storyline almost spot-on. All in all, a nice bit of metaphysical, mystical cinema worthy of your viewing, be sure to turn up your set when the actual shout happens!

The DVD edition is pretty decent. Clean transfer, nice soundtrack, altough maybe a bit quiet. No subtitles. Extras include a theatrical trailer, audio commentary by Stephen Jones, and also included is a 10-page booklet containing more background information on the production of the film.
